Resilience in first generation college students
Zumrová, Barbora ; Machovcová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Frombergerová, Anna (referee)
The Bachelor thesis is dedicated to exploring resilience in first-generation college students. The aim is to affect factors contributing to the design of resilience and stress management strategies based on analysis of study experience. The theoretical part represents the situation of first-generation university students in the context of mental health. Attention is paid to resilience, protective and risk factors, and specific factors that strengthen or inhibit resilience in these students. The empirical part uses complex methodologies: individual trajectory of study, The Brief Resilience Scale, and semi-structured interviews. The research sample is composed of ten first-generation students (21-24 years) studying full-time in humanities-oriented fields in the 2nd to 5th year of the bachelor's program. Individual medallions of resilience were created from the data collected and a thematic analysis of interviews was carried out. Research shows the importance of close relationships and a supportive learning environment for the development of higher resilience, at the same time for shaping resilience in some can be beneficial, overcoming the initial adversity that leads to building adaptability to burdens. Intrinsic motivation to study did not always lead to a smooth course of study, with tendencies...

This bachelor thesis investigates how student identity of college students whose parents do not have university degree is constructed. Aim is to find out how they reflect their past and current experiences in order to understand the meanings they attribute to subjectively important decisions and breakthroughs in the context of university studies, and to capture processes that play a crucial role in constructing their identity focusing the influence of family support and interest. In the theoretical part, I introduced the concept of social class in psychology and the basic theories of social reproduction and mobility within education. Furthermore, the specifics of the Czech education system are characterized, with a particular focus on tertiary education, values gained by family and school, and first-generation university students. Last but not least, I deal with identity, its definition from the point of view of mainstream and social constructivist psychology and its formation in the period of emerging adulthood and during the transition to university. In the empirical part, semi-structured interviews were utilized to collect data. The obtained data is processed qualitatively within interpretative framework using thematic analysis. The studied sample consists of six first-generation university...
